FAQs

Thank you all for your interest in RedToast. We have been receiving queries and thought that it was time to put together a FAQ post so that the more shy (or lazy) ones among you who might have the same questions, might get the answers too. Feel free to write to us at toastimages@gmail.com or through the contact box in the right margin of this page for more information.

1. So what exactly does RedToast do?

A unique gift, a token of love, a piece of art, customised home decoration, a stylish painting, a reason to celebrate… RedToast is an attempt to roll all this into one. We specialise in transforming normal photographs into hand-painted masterpieces that can adorn your walls, through a creatively intense process. The end product is an oil painting on mounted canvas, but it would be wrong to call a Toast a painting.

2. So how is this concept different from a painting or a portrait?

A painting is a faithful imitation of a snapshot, and is hence incapable of featuring additional design elements. In a sense, paintings are constrained by the need to conform to reality! Assume you want a painting of your friend who is good at playing the piano, and also enjoys travelling. It is impossible for a painted portrait to capture two such disparate personality traits. But a Toast does not suffer from such constraints. We can easily produce a design that combines your friend’s profile with images of a piano, his favourite travel destinations, apart from adding in more abstract elements of his character and much, much more.

3. So this is just a digital remix of photographs?

Not at all. The Toast features a lot more than just photographs. It integrates several elements – physical such as images and text; abstract such as mood and tone; as well as thematic props. Photographs, much like paintings, rarely capture all these diverse elements. Imagine our friend from the previous example getting a picture clicked while playing the piano atop the Eiffel Tower!

Additionally, a Toast stands apart from a photograph since it is hand-painted by a set of outstanding artisans, who have mastered the craft of putting oil on canvas.

4. Ok, I want to get a Toast done. How do I go about it?

Great! Welcome aboard. Shoot us off a mail at toastimages@gmail.com and we will get back in touch with you to get your requirements. Still a little confused about how to make best use of our services? Worry not, for we are at hand to help you zero in on the right Toast.

5. What are the various inputs that go into designing a toast?

There is really no restriction to the type of input you can provide us. The idea is to capture and celebrate as many elements of the subject’s personality as possible. Apart from their best photographs, you can share with us their likes/dislikes (food, place, book, song, hobbies, painting, color), as well as the overall mood, occasion and theme desired for the Toast. The sky is the limit – the more the inputs the better. Again, we are there to help you through the process.

6. I love the concept and want to go ahead with it, but unfortunately I don’t have high resolution pictures of my loved ones! What do I do?

That’s not a problem at all! The resolution of the pictures you provide don’t matter to us since our artists will recreate them from scratch on canvas. All that matters is that the photo captures a special moment perfectly!

7. What is the typical size of a Toast?

That depends on how you want it to be displayed. It can be as small as 1ft X 1ft or as big as 5ft X 5ft. It can be a single painting or a multiple-panel set such as a triptych (three panels). The sky is literally the limit.

8. How long does it take to prepare a Toast?

From the time of receiving your inputs, it typically takes about 25-30 days to deliver the Toast. We are working towards reducing lead times further; however, the main constraint is the drying stage for the painting – a process that cannot be hurried. So if you are looking to gift someone a Toast on a special day, don’t leave it to the last moment!

9. Will the final Toast be ready for display?

We have the option of either providing you with a rolled up canvas, or a mounted canvas at a nominal additional charge.

10. What are the payment options available to me?

Currently we accept the payments through a bank transfer to our account. We are working on getting payment gateways set up in the near future.

From design to painting: How a Toast is born – 2

This post uses an example to explain the process flow from the time we get your inputs, until the delivery of the Toast.

Once you provide us with your inputs – pictures, theme, props and other requirements – our creative team brainstorms and designs the toast by combining the input elements in the best possible way. We do this first trial run free of cost, and provide a digital version for your review.

If you want to make changes at this stage, we are glad to incorporate them into the design. We are open to doing as many iterations as required, since it is important that we get the design right before going ahead! Here’s an example of a typical sample:

Once you receive the trial sample, you get back to us with feedback and we incorporate modifications until you are satisfied with how your Toast will look. The payment is done at this stage, before our professional painters render the agreed upon design onto canvas.

Here’s how the final Toast looks. We have used the knife technique for this painting, i.e. the strokes are made using the side to give it the unique look. It is a near faithful rendition of the original design, only better since it is embellished by the hand-crafted brilliance of oil on canvas!

PS – The guy in the painting has two passions – his wife and cricket! That explains the visual elements included in the toast.

PS – The girl in the painting is a painter herself – hence the colourful theme, highlighting the things that make her happy: the painting tools and the free-spirited girl on the left bottom of the picture, and a happy picture of her husband and her!

Baby’s day out!

What better way to celebrate your little ones, than by recording their childhood for posterity! At RedToast we transform your child’s pics into a special painting that can adorn your walls long after he/she grows up past the toddler stage.

Avika’s parents gave us three of her cute pictures.

We transformed the pictures into a Toast, keeping the childhood theme in mind. This is how it looks (click to enlarge):

Note the pastel colours we have chosen for this Toast, in addition to butterflies and flowers. Not to mention, the feet of the child and the mother touching each other – a visual element that epitomises a special bond. This is how the Toast will look on a wall:

Celebrating life!

Photographs capture the best moments of our lives, but there is only so far the camera can go. At Redtoast, we transform a set of your best photographs into timeless canvas masterpieces that can adorn your walls. Here’s a quick walk-through that attempts to capture the process by which we convert pictures into works of art.

The test subjects, D and M, are a couple based in Madras. They have been married for two years and love each other as dearly as they love their city. M is a strategy consultant, while D is a yoga trainer. And both of them have a soft spot for the colours of life and beaches (all of which we will incorporate into their Toast)! We asked them to send us a bunch of their best photographs, of which we picked the following for the Toast.

To populate the triptych (three panel wall-hanging), we chose four portraits with close-ups of the couple:

Additionally, we picked a couple of striking high-resolution pictures of her on a beach.

The settings of the pictures are brilliant, but note that for our purpose, they may have as well been shot indoors. As you will see below, the creativity of our design experts is about to retain the human features of these photographs and render them with a completely different look and feel.

At Red Toast, we give mundane photographs an artistic finish through a technically and creatively intensive process. We first produce a digital version, which incorporates the right design elements that enhance the best features of the pictures.

We then hand the digital version over to our painters, who have extended training in the art of putting paint to canvas. It is this step that makes a Toast stand apart from a run of the mill poster, or a straightforward painting. The conversion of the digital impression into a handmade painting ensures that your Toast incorporates the best of both worlds.

Here’s what we come up with at the end of our efforts (please click to enlarge):

Note the thematic usage of colours in the triptych. We have included a silhouette of a girl in a yoga pose in the first panel, which immediately connects with the biggest passion in Divya’s life. Next to it is a subtle outline of the famous Anna Memorial, a heritage site on the Marina Beach in Chennai, a place often frequented by the couple.

In the third panel, observe how the image if Divya on the beach has been made to look like she is splashing coloured water on the faces on the right… And both of them seem to be squinting in joy in the pic, the standard reaction of people splashed with water!

This is how the Toast would look on the walls of their bedroom. Intimate, special and altogether wonderful!
